Public cloud vs Private cloud

The increasing popularity of Cloud Computing services among the users of different concepts of information technology had made it difficult to differentiate between public cloud and private cloud. In this article you will find the basic difference between both the types of clouds used in IT field.

The concept of Cloud Computing has fascinated almost all of the IT users whether they are IT professionals or a general Internet surfer. It can be confusing concept for the people who are not familiar with the wide range of facilities provided effectively by really power loaded, huge Data Centers having thousands of servers. But still it is confusing to differentiate between private cloud and public cloud even if they have many facilities for the users.

Services provided by Cloud Data Centers

Before differentiating between public cloud and private cloud you should know about the facilities provided by Cloud Data Centers. A cloud data center owns a number of servers with all types of running services including CRM, ERP, email etc. The cloud service provider allows the users to access all of these services through internet and the users are charged for the amount of services used. Some of the service providers offer computing power with very vague scalability to their customers. In this way you need not buy a data center, new server or rack if you are buying the services of cloud service provider to use all kinds of services. You have only to open an account with the service provider and pay for the amount of services used by you. Thus you need not pay for the time when you are using the servers. It can be summarized as an instantly deployable, metered, scalable and readily available online service.

Private and Public Cloud

Differentiating between Public and Private Cloud

Public cloud is a kind of service that is available to multiple users at a time. For instance Gmail is a public cloud where unlimited users can use its services anytime by paying for the amount of services used. Similarly you can find a number of public cloud services people use in their day to day life.

Private cloud is a term that includes the same features as public cloud but it differs when it comes to security and scalability. Basically service layers are offered by private cloud confined within the firewalls of the company. You can use all sorts of services offered by the private cloud and run in your data center. In this way a private cloud offers services to internal users like the workers in different departments of an organization instead of providing instantly deployable, scalable and metered services to the whole world.

So far as security of data downloaded through Private Cloud is concerned, they are not that much unsafe as objected by most of the users of public cloud. The private cloud is safe for the company which had implemented it safely within its firewalls. Company has more control on the data received through private cloud. Though it can offload the responsibility of the data lost due to natural reasons to the public cloud vendor but still the data received through private cloud is the safest for the corporate.

Management of Cloud

While using cloud there are management implications in using both of its types. While using private cloud the organization has to specify its demand while buying, updating, maintaining and securing the infrastructure of the cloud as every thing has to be done physically. You will have to make huge initial capital investment for deploying Private cloud as well as for adding new equipments to increase its capacity, which will affect the financial management of the organization. Owning the responsibility of implementing, running and managing the cloud can be considered as one of the drawbacks of using private cloud by a company. It can not pass on the responsibility to a third party like public cloud service provider in case of any problem.

The management responsibility of the cloud can be divested to the cloud vendor by the organization while using public cloud. The huge initial capital investment is saved while using public cloud even for organizational use. The organization has to pay only for the amount of services used or the amount of data downloaded. The vendor of the public cloud has to own the responsibility of maintenance and safety of the services provided to his customers. Responsibility of providing the best services to the satisfaction of the customer also lies on the vendor.

Many organizations prefer public cloud for their IT services due to its scalability feature which not only saves their initial capital investment but also save their money spent on the services when they are not using them. Use of shared resources of public cloud can reduce your organizational expenses considerably low. You can choose the solutions and services as needed by the organization to achieve its target. This facility is not available in private cloud services.

After considering all the points of difference between private and public cloud it can be concluded that main difference between the public cloud and private cloud is the safety and security of the data downloaded through them. Private cloud allows the users to manage and operate the machines and software physically as their deployment and billing system is not automatic and pay for the services used. Public cloud, on the other hand, offers instantly deployable, metered, scalable and readily available online services. Other reasons to prefer public cloud over private cloud include:

The best security experts are utilized by Public cloud Better data center is provided by Public cloud to store data to provide the latest security measures as the services are scalable The continuous hacking attempts made to test the working of Public cloud Extensive testings are not done by Private cloud companies Older technologies are used by Private cloud companies as compared to public cloud companies The competency of the staff Private cloud companies is misunderstood In general companies do not use the best cloud services for the security of their data unless they get adversely affected from it.

Thus public cloud is considered to be safer and secured computing solution than private cloud.
