Black Friday: A Day That Will Live in Idiocy

Black Friday

Black Friday. The name alone is enough to send a feverous chill down my spine. Each year, drones of morons wake up at ungodly hours of the morning, eat some cold turkey for breakfast and go wait in line so when the gates open to their designated store of choice they can trample over one another and fight for that last “hot holiday item” as if retailers aren't properly prepared to handle the supply chain of the holiday season for the next month. I can’t help but wonder what the point (or appeal for that matter) of all this is.

The “nice guy” part of my personality wants to apologize for that last paragraph, it really does. However, those years of working retail through College or my current profession as a digital marketer just won’t let me. Don’t get confused here, I’m not the anti-holiday type or even the anti-corporation type. I’m a fan of retail business and love to do my Christmas shopping every year. The balance however is that I’m also a fan of sanity and acting like an adult. Therefore, my shopping this weekend will go the Ecommerce route. What’s the point of getting up early on Black Friday when you can still get great deals from the comfort of your own home on Cyber Monday?

Maybe it’s just me. Large crowds make me anxious, and God forbid someone has a screaming kid in there. That alone is enough to make me want to stay indoors and never leave. Think about it, you can find just about anything you desire on the internet from the most expensive Yoyos available to kitchen and household appliances to musical equipment and beyond. Technology has reached the point to where we can even make these purchases from our mobile phones. Once life has become that convenient, why would you waste your time throwing down with some crazy housewife over a shave kit for your father in law?

I suppose if you’re a people watcher, Black Friday and a shopping mall would be a fantastic place to get some of this done. I saw a YouTube video with a crowd of hipsters storming the castle at a popular clothing store during the midnight opening of a Black Friday sale in the mall. The irony in this of course is that they were doing so non-ironically. I’m not sure if this means that it cancels the irony out or if it’s a new form of uber-hipsterism. Mind-blowing, isn’t it?

Therefore, before you slam a few energy drinks and go brave the insanity of the day, think about all the good solutions Ecommerce has to offer. The internet is a bountiful cornucopia of goods, and chances are you can find that special gift for that special someone online. Transactions are safe and secure from the computer. The same thing can be said for mobile payments as well. You can find everything you need with ease on the internet – all from the comfort of your own home. I urge you to give Ecommerce a try this year. Unless of course, dodging elbows to the cranium while four people scramble for a digital camera is your thing. Then by all means, good luck with that. I however will choose to make the same purchase from home while enjoying my cup of morning coffee.
