American Heart Association

Hassan desperately gasped for a breath of air; as he fell to the ground from unbearable, pounding and pulsating pressure residing in the center of his chest. He was a successful entrepreneur, only 29 years old, with a perturbed reality of an unhealthy heart. Unfortunately, there is an epidemic that is contributing to the death and mortality rate among many Americans each year. From preliminary data and statistics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), once again, named heart disease the leading cause of death in the United States for 2010. Luckily, Hassan escaped this statistic and lived to tell his story, contradicting the many misconceptions of heart diseases and conditions “only” affect the “older” generation. Hassan Bawab, the CEO and Founder of Magic Logix, found himself undergoing a serious heart surgery at a young age and hopes his story can help aid the younger generation to prevent heart failure.

On March 3rd, 2009, Hassan was next in line in the hospital to undergo an SVT surgery. A week prior to the surgery, Hassan had been suffering from shortness of breath, chest discomfort, sharp pain, and pressure in his chest. When the pain worsened, his cardiologist diagnosed him with Supraventricular Tachycardia, a serious heart condition causing the heart to beat at an irregular, fast pace of 300 beats per minute. An average, normal heart rate is 60 to 100 beats per minute. At 29, Hassan had already successfully started his own digital marketing company. As a dedicated business owner, Hassan was custom to spending many sleepless nights and weekends dedicated to his work.  Because heart conditions did not run in his family, and because he was still in his 20s, Hassan did not expect to be undergoing a surgery for such a serious heart condition. When asked the effect the condition had on his everyday tasks he stated, “It prevented me dedicating the amount of time I wanted into my business and I was in treatment for several months after the surgery. This of course, was a drastic eye opener to the importantance  of slowing down a bit, and  adopting a healthier lifestyle.”

Luckily, Hassan had the support of his colleagues, clients, friends and family during the surgery and recovery. His mother came from Lebanon to sit next to him and be his support. While the cause of SVT is not determined, once diagnosed there are precautionary steps and medications to help prevent the triggering of the irregular heartbeat. A few prevention techniques include; limiting the intake of caffeine, healthy eating, avoiding stress and most importantly sleeping an adequate amount of hours. Hassan is a firm supporter of the American Heart Association and hopes to be more involved in his community to help support the cause of heart diseas prevention.  His final words of advice to the younger crowd were, “I advise the younger generation to take care of their health, limit their stress in their personal and professional lives, and diet to prevent the situation from occurring in the future. Business is important but your life and your health is top priority.”   As a full supporter of the American Heart Association, Hassan feels it is necessary to share his story, in order to cause awareness to the youth of America and help drop the death statics contributed to heart disease. Hassan hopes that his journey and experience will help aid and subsidize the importance of proper prevention of heart disease through the adaptation of healthy lifestyles.

According to the American Heart Association over 99% of Americans need to improve their overall heart health. The AHA promotes healthy lifestyles in order to help cause awareness in the movement to help Americans live healthier, and reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke.
